about the product

Fake Bake Instant Self Tanner provides a beautifully natural tan that is guaranteed to satisfy even the palest skin tones. Fake Bake's exclusive formula works to enhance your own pigment without turning you orange. The rich-cocoa brown color ensures a streak-free application every time! APPLICATION TIP: Dry skin will absorb self tanner unevenly, making it tough to rub in. Make sure you moisturize before applying tanner in order to insure an even, streak-free tan.

6 fl oz

how to use it
Be sure that the product you use already has a sunscreen or use a separate one. Exfoliate your skin with a loofah before applying sunless tanning lotions to avoid uneven application of color. Apply to skin in thin layer wherever you want color. Avoid getting product on hair or eyebrows because it can color hair. To avoid staining clothing, wait about 30 minutes for the product to dry before putting on clothes. Try wearing dark clothing to avoid staining. Tanning lotion tends to get applied unevenly to areas such as elbows, ankles, and knees. To remove excess and avoid uneven darkening, wipe over joints and creases with a wet cotton pad. Wash your hands thoroughly so you don't have tanned palms. Don't shave, bathe, or swim for at least an hour after applying the product.

OMG! I'm blue!
Was this helpful?
Okay, I read about how dark the guide was and I was ready for that but I'm BLUE. Not muddy, not dark brown but BLUE! I have olive skin but my face doesn't tan as well as the rest of me so I was simply trying to get my face to match my arms, chest, etc...but maybe this product isn't meant for olive skin tones. Would sure be nice if they but a warning on the label. Now I have to take tomorrow off work because there is now way I can go to work looking like a smurf. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE experience!!!

I absolutely love this product!!!! I have an allergy to the sun and other than my forearms, cannot seem to get any color the natural way. This is the ONLY product I have ever used that does not give an orange hue, goes on beautifully, looks completely natural, lasts and doesn't stain my clothes!!! I've used just about every store bought brand and never came close to these results!
Great for redheads!

I am about the palest of the pale as I am a natural redhead. I used this product and it by far as the best color for my skin tone. I have used others but this is the top one I prefer! Only 2 applications during the first week as just the perfect color. One application I could barely tell but the second application it looked just enough to make me look some what tan. It looked completely natural. If you are a fair skinned redhead I would recommend this!! Go for it
Awesome color but doesn't last long...

This product really is great. The color is fantastic. It looks so natural! Easy to apply with the color guide. My only complaint is that a great deal of the awesome color does wash off when you shower the next day. I'd say at least half of the color, which is disappointing. If anyone has suggestions about this, please let me know! But like I said - the natural color of this product can't be beat as far as sunless tanners go.
Best I have ever used!

I can understand why all fake tanners get some bad reviews. Applying correctly and no streaks does take practice no matter which one you use. I have been using different tanners for years and you need to keep the following in mind: exfoliate at least 3 times a week (you will lose a small amount of tan, so don't worry about it), moisturize BEFORE you use the tanner, take your time and get full coverage, mix the tanner with other moisturizer before spreading on feet/hands/knees/elbows, have someone else do your back or spray it, and spend more money to get the good stuff! Fake Bake has the best color and smell. The color is brown with no orange tint whatsoever and the smell is nice. The instructions say to use it at night so you don't stain your clothes. I do use it during the day, but only if I am wearing dark clothing and don't plan on sweating. The dark "guide" color has always washed out of my clothing without staining it...just don't wear white or light colors if you haven't showered. You do need to wear it for a full day or night before showering for the tanning to take. For those that have not used tanner before..."guide color" is additional coloring in the lotion that helps you see where you are putting it. Fake Bake's guide color is black, but don't worry because it rubs in and disappears.
No difference..

Did you exfoliate before putting it on?

I am an esthetician, a person who offers skin care services of all kinds. I also sell Fake Bake Spray tan services and lotions. After reading many reviews I can see how some of you have been discouraged. Here are some tips. Always make sure you have exfoliated well, this means you have used a washcloth, body scrub, loofah and so forth. In addition it is wise to have freshly shaved or wax prior to using this or any self tanning product. This is also a form of exfoliating the body. Any excess dead skin cells that you cannot see with the naked eye (because they are way too small) will hold onto the color. This is what is known as streaking. In addition, your body works with this product by the use of DHEA, this allows you to gradually become darker over time. This also happens with sun exposure, however, we are all trying to avoid harmful rays. For those that have never tried spray tanning, I highly recommend this method. It is a great way to start this process, then maintain with the self tanning lotion. You only need to apply the self tanning lotion once every two to three days, otherwise moisturize with a regular body lotion (nothing with alpha hydroxy acids added, or AHA) which will extend the life of your tan. Be aware that any time after you've been using a spray tan method or self tanning cream that you shave, or wax, say your bikini line, you will remove some of all of the tan in that area. However you can either have it blended back to a normal color if you apply the self tanning lotion. Best results come with consistency as the tan takes time to build. Good luck!

I'm fair-skinned, blonde hair...so I typically stay out of the sun and strictly use sunless tanning lotions. I discovered Fake Bake three years ago and it's all I use now. I use it 1-2 times per week for a constant, streakless tan. My boyfriend loves the smell too..says I smell like oatmeal cookies after I use it. Small warning though, for any users who say FB doesn't stain...um, not true! It stains everything it touches! I definitely devote a set of sheets and pajamas to my FB-application nights.
went bad too fast!

I feel that half of these reviews are from product endorsers, they sound reallly infomercial- like. I am 16 and investing my money in fake bake was a lil risky for me. I was kinda embarrassed to use self-tanning at first, but I figured it's better in the long run, plus I didn't want to deal with my mom getting upset for me going to booths (she had skin cancer) So I bought it, everyone in my family made fun of me the night of my application, because i looked like I had been rolling around in dirt. Buuuut the following morning I had such a glow it was amazing! I'm so pale you have no idea! The only problems i had were with my hands and feet, but I have a feeling that was my fault at the application stage. I just came back from tennis and I was a little nervous someone would find a streak somewhere I hadn't BUT NOBODY DID! I got great comments, and it made my teeth look way whiter my girl mentioned. I was thrilled, even in the natural light it looked natural! I personally liked the smell, and highly recommend it!

I'm in my 20s with skin cancer from too much sun! The doctor told me I am absolutely NOT allowed in the sun without sunscreen. I have an olive skin tone but without any sun whatsoever I am white as a GHOST!! Fake bake went on nicely and didn't stain my clothes/bed sheets. For those of you who experienced streaking, I found that realllly rubbing it in helps and the patchy fading can easily be fixed by exfoliating.
MIRACLE - TO THOSE WHO HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE - SOME TIPS

BEST PRODUCT ON THE MARKET - IF YOU FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS. I used to tan 5 days a week in a tanning bed. For obvious health care concerns I started trying every self tanner on the market to only be left dissatisfied. Then I found Fake Bake and everyone is wanting to know my secret - especially those still tanning in a tanning bed - we have the same color. Tips to others. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS. I have used it with gloves without gloves, I never streak, I never turn orange. Yes, you have to go through a process but the results are FABULOUS !!! - all self tanning is a process and others are less than average.. As far as using it at night, when I want a little extra color in the day I mix it with my Mystic Tan Life Extending Lotion no bad smell and amazing color. First exfoliate really well, you will also need to exfoliate once a week. Use a body wash such as Pure Intentions from Designer Skin (some say Dove products react badly with self tanners - your body wash/lotion may leave a residue on your skin which could be why your experience with a self tanner is less than average - such as the color washing away or a peeling effect). For hands and feet try mixing a little Fake Bake with a little Mystic Tan Life Extending Lotion it gives those areas a natural look if your skin is dry. For those who turn blue or green, again it could be the other products that you use prior to your Fake Bake application. Stay away from products containing Alpha Hydroxy it could ruin your fake tan.
really impressed

I have been using Fake Bake for a couple of years. Really only when I have an event and don't want to wear stockings. I first found out about it at a Esthetics show. It was great. I don't know if the formula has been changed or what but now it's not as good. I purchased the lotion, gloves are horrible and sticky. I just rub it in and use an old wash cloth to rub it in more. I only used it a couple of times and now its like it is old and expired. It doesn't go on the same way, it's really watery. So I got the spray. It was GREEN! I tried to return it, but no response from Fake Bake. I do still have the face Anti-Aging Self Tanning Lotion. I normally get a facial, with a great exfoliator and then apply the product. It works great. I do not wear foundation, and have very even skin. I wish the rest of my body looked as well. Fake Bake used to be good. Now just So So!

I bought fake bake from a salon and it was a bright green color when I opened it, tried it anyway, it went on green and the next morning no color. I'm returning it. Check to make sure bottle is fully sealed. If it's on sale it's old.

I tried the fake bake mousse and saw no difference in color and it burned and dried out my skin. The best sunless tan is from Extended Vacation Moroccan Mineral. This tan works even for my fair skin is moisturizing and the color lasts for about 7 days if you exfoliate before using and moisturize with a gentle lotion daily. The color guide is dark and splotchy but as long as you have been over all areas and rubbed product in you will be even the next morning after showering(also color will deepen a bit over the next several hours). This is the only self tanner (and I have tried about all of them) that will give color to my torso. Try Extended Vacation Morroccan Mineral. I want to make sure they get lots of bussiness because I would be devastated if they stopped making this stuff.
haven't tried it

I thought about trying this, but I have been using loreal sublime bronze and most of the readers that didn't like it loved that. I think I will stick with it. cheap, and works great, with color guide and light shimmer. only have to dry for an hour! You can be at the pool with your kids,or whatever.
AWESOME

I have this product in the mousse form and I have the entire bottle of this stuff left that I will never use becuase it is SO orange! It looks like I went to wal-mart and bought the cheapest tanner they had and put it on, then I look like a big orange. St. Tropez is WAY better than this stuff!!
